http://archive.light-reviews.com/surefire_l1/01.jpgThe SureFire L1 reviewed here is the new improved 2007 production version which uses a Cree emitter, and advertised as having improved output and longer runtime over previous versions. The head is made up of 2 parts which are adhered together, they’re not easily disassembled for modifications. Anyway, doing so will void the warranty. Up the front, the head has a crenellated bezel. Inside, it houses a Pyrex glass window which has a very light diffusing texture applied to its inner face. This texture is not apparently noticeable though, the easiest way to see it is by looking at it an at an acute angle. Light produced by the emitter is focused by a collimating lens instead of a regular reflector. Emitter and lens are well aligned. All the electronics regulating the power to the emitter is housed inside the sealed head. Threads on the rear end of the head are well machined, smooth and thick. The entire outer surface of the head, including the threads, have been coated consistently in a very dark gray type 3 hard anodizing with a subtle brown hue and also has a slight grainy texture. There are some shallow flat scallops machined around the head which are mostly for aesthetic purposes and doesn't act as an anti-roll feature as it may initially seem.

There’s an additional contact interface which sits at the front end of the battery tube. It provides good contact between the battery and the “+” contact point of the electronics. It also isolates the battery chamber from the electronics within the head from battery leaks or any liquid which may have entered via the tail end. This is a nice feature and allows battery changes while unsheltered in the rain without worry of water effecting the electronics. The inner walls and threads on either ends of the battery tube are coated with an anti-oxidizing chemical. Some of this coating has been rubbed off on the threads due to the friction from the inevitable screwing against the tail cap. The rear end of the battery tube has a polished bare aluminum ring inlaid which provides good electrical contact to the tail cap switch. The exterior of the battery tube has a band of knurling about 1.9cm wide, and has 3 smoothened out faces machined on it. The diamond-textured knurling is nice and rough providing very good grip. The L1 comes with a stainless steel pocket clip which fits quite tight in its slot and hard to remove. This pocket clip also doubles as an anti-roll feature. Overall, the machining of the battery tube is very well done, however I did notice some machining marks around the scalloped surfaces towards the front end. The coating is very good as with every other part of the light. There’re 2 thick rubber o-rings on either ends of the battery tube which fit tightly providing a good barrier from external moisture. Although not recommended, the L1 is able to accommodate protected 16340 cells albeit having a snug fit. With AW protected cells, I had to peel of the silver sticker label to have them fit into the L1’s battery tube. The tail cap houses a forward momentary switch and requires it to be twisted for constant activation. There’s a band of knurling about 1.2cm wide with the same aggressive knurling found on the battery tube which makes it very easy to grip, even with gloves on. The L1 comes with a lanyard loop attachment which is detachable. The rubber push button sticks out quite a bit out the tail end which makes it very easy to activate, obviously this means the L1 can't tail stand. You can unscrew the tail cap to effectively lock out the switch and prevents accidental activation.
Output
The output from the L1 provides a nice balance of low and high levels. The low level is manufacturer rated at 10 lumens, while high at 65 lumens running on CR123 cells. Depending on how far the tail cap is screwed in, the L1 can be activated in the following configurations.
Lock out:
Doesn't allow activation.
Momentary (screwed in 1.5 turns from lockout position):
Half-press for low, full-press for high.
Constant low (further screwed in about 1 turn from momentary position):
Light is activated constantly on low. Press for high.
Constant high (screwed in all the way):
Light is activated constantly on high.
The output and regulation performance is very good from a single CR123 cell. If you want an additional boost in output, you may also use a 3.7V 16340 li-ion cell in the L1. Take note that gray UltraFire protected 16340 cells will not fit as they are slightly thicker and longer than AW protected 16340 cells. Beam profile is smooth and provides a nice mid-sized hotspot and average amount of soft spill beam. Color temperature is slightly warm on my sample which is close to sunlight white. There are no noticeable artifacts in the beam, the corona around the hotspot is very slightly skewed to one side but it doesn't affect practical use.

Conclusion
The Good - Excellent construction and finishing with a lifetime warranty. Well designed for use in most rugged outdoor environments. Good balance of high and low levels while providing long runtime on a single CR123 cell.
The Bad - Quite large for a single CR123 light. Costs more than other lights with similar functionality.
The Relative - Uses a momentary-on push button and requires a twist for constant activation. Beam has a slightly warm color temperature. Isn't able to tail stand.
